Build me Up, Buttercup

  • Build me Up, Buttercup

It was the first week of March, 2008.  I had taken the train from Fairfield to Boston for my first DrupalCon.  The weather was cold and rainy all week.  I was staying in a big, institutional hostel that felt very much like a YMCA.  They even provided flip-flops for the showers ... I'm guessing there had been a problem with athlete's foot!  It wasn't homey, but it was affordable.

Around 11:00 one night, the fire alarm went off, and all hundred or so people who were in the building at the time had to go outside... into the rain.  When we didn't all fit under the awning of the building, a group headed for another awning across the street and about 50 feet down.  Morale was not great.  Then, out of nowhere, one of the hostel staff belted out, "WHY do you build me up?"

Another staffer at the awning down the street echoed, "Build me up."

Our guy continued, clapping along, "Buttercup, baby, just to let me down."

A group of women, now, at the other awning, laughing: "Let me down."

"And mess me around, and then worst of all --"

"Worst of all --"

And so on, all the way through the song.  We were smiling, enjoying the randomness of being stuck out in the rain for this impromptu performance.  The song ended, and the singers melted into the crowd of people, and pretty soon we were able to go back inside.
